Wojtek, The Polish War Bear

This illustration was dedicated to Wojtek, the Polish war bear from the 1940s. My goal was to show how Wojtek was just another comrade in the eyes of the Polish army while still making him stand out among the other soldiers. Many of the elements seen here are from my research into what the Polish army was like during the years Wojtek was active, what the soldiers would have worn, and the various badges and symbols found within their specific unit. Wojtek was and is still a fascinating piece of history!

Sea of people

And now for one of my favorites! This piece is a showcase of how I handle crowds and how I can still bring so much personality to a mass of people. This, specifically, is an illustration of crowds with a twist. Having the people turning into fish and the city turning into coral is my way of showing a parallel between two unlikely subjects yet still finding ways to tie them both together.

Human Harvest

Sci-Fi has always been an interest of mine and this piece was so much fun to work on. My prompt was simply “Magical Garden” so I ran with that and created a piece showing a team of alien scientists growing human beings in their laboratory. This illustration displays my love of gestures and posing of the characters within my art. I adore showing the most subtle of human body language to indicate emotion and this illustration is a strong example of that.

Lesbian Vampyres From Outer Space

Ah, another fun one! This is dedicated to the song “Lesbian Vampyres from Outer Space” by Scary Bitches. I wanted to design an interesting set of characters that were a mix between vampires and aliens while also having different ways lesbians can look. I don’t see a lot of lesbian representation in media so I wanted to change that. This piece was not only a way of getting to illustrate my music taste but also a means of putting my own identity into my work.

Just a few bad Apples

As much as I love to focus on the positive, I believe that it is still very important to address serious topics. This piece is meant to highlight the corruption in the police system. Not just the violence but the bribery, the drug planting, and the refusal to speak out against fellow officers.

Geography Binder Cover

Surface design had never crossed my mind until this piece. I had to choose a school subject and design a cover for said subject. I knew geography would be a challenge as I tended to avoid drawing environments in the past. I was pushed out of my comfort zone and this experience was a huge milestone in my art. This piece made me not so afraid of adding environments to my artwork.

LAvender Menace

The entire process of creating this illustration was deeply personal to me. This piece is a mural design dedicated to butch lesbian writers. Even in my own community, butches are heavily underappreciated and this was my way of paying homage to the butch lesbians that came before me, that inspire me. The butches featured in this piece are as follows: Leslie Feinberg, Pat Parker, Audre Lorde, Kitty Tsui, and Alison Bechdel.

Primary Thoughts

I am a very expressive person and if you were to ever meet me, you would see that plain as day. So with that expressiveness, I put that in my work via wacky faces and gestures. One of my favorite things to illustrate is wild facial expressions and weird little cartoons.

Under the knife

Another personal one but an important one. Some of my best pieces stem from what I have been through or emotions that I’ve dealt with. They say to write what you know but I say draw what you know!
